My aim with this piece was to explore ideas surrounding femininity and, in particular, the transition between girlhood and womanhood. I wanted to present objects with a hyper-feminine and stereotypically “girly” appearance, that also provoke a feeling of discomfort to highlight the way young women are treated. The inherent sexualisation of girls and the difficulty in navigating this time in life, between being a child and being an adult. drastic change to the scale of familiar symbols or shapes instantly alters the way we perceive them, I want the viewer to ask themselves, if feeling uncomfortable, what is the real source of their discomfort?
