As a child, my father’s study was his domain. Dimly lit, usually a single angle-poise lamp, pooling over his chaotic desk, casting long shadows but little light. The Chinese House Gods, bought when we lived in Hong Kong, emerged from the gloom above the over-stuffed bookcase, ever watchful, ominous and unexplained, creeping into my nightmares. Since I have inherited them, I have discovered they are all agents of good – guardians and heroes, dispellers of evil or symbols of mercy and compassion. All, in fact, positive, supportive and benign.
