“If I had to redo my life, I would only do black and white” - Degas
This Summer School will give students the opportunity to spend two days thoroughly investigating tone in monochromatic drawings and paintings.
We will practise locating tonal values and playing with light and shadow to create dynamic compositions. Avoiding outlines, tone can be used to give form to objects and a sense of their weight. Over the two days, we will complete a number of sketches, one large sustained drawing and a reduction painting where areas of light are wiped away from the image.
This course is designed for beginners and those wishing to revisit the importance of tone in their work.
