The One Day Painting Course provides a unique opportunity for anyone wishing to spend one day a week over an academic year refining their artistic skills through an intensive programme of teaching.
Aims:
The One Day Painting course is an ideal course for those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of their own practice or who want to improve their portfolio and enhance their current body of work. It is best suited to people who have some experience but would like additional input to reinvigorate their artistic practice and refine their skills.
Students explore their own ideas from the outset, recognising and developing their own unique artistic voice within the supportive framework of the course. Crucially, students are encouraged to think critically about their own work and its relation to the broad discipline of painting in both historical and contemporary contexts.
Content:
In the first term, students are introduced to creative ideas and processes enabling them to confidently develop their individual research interests in new and exciting directions. In the second term, students are encouraged to focus their ideas in greater depth, taking risks and pushing boundaries. The final term is dedicated to taking this research and creating a substantial body of resolved work.
In addition to studio work, students are expected to undertake work outside the course, including research through reading, drawing and visiting exhibitions.
The history of drawing and painting is an important element of the course and there are regular lectures that place the practice of drawing and painting in its wider context. In addition to daily one-to-one dialogue with tutors, students take part in group critiques and are encouraged to develop a high degree of critical awareness.
Outcome:
At the end of the course, the students will feel equipped to work independently and ‘set up’ for self-directed working. In addition, they will have a significant body of independently researched work which will be shown in the School’s Summer Exhibition in June.
‘Small group. Friendly and inspirational tuition.’
