During my time studying painting at LSA I have developed a creative relationship with the medium to tell stories. The current works set inside caves explore various emotional inhabitations felt during the pandemic (Social media polarisation, fear of strangers, attempts to develop intimacy thru phones, unhealthy habits) using dreamlike creatures to play out these experiences and feelings.
The paintings set around cars in woods is an exploration into situations and atmospheres that would generally cause great anxiety in conscious waking hours but in melancholic dreams can generate a peacefulness and sense of calm.
Biography
Sarah Elizabeth Messenger (b. 1985) developed her dreamy creative narratives during her time at Duncan of Jordanstone studying Time Based Art. However, it wasn’t until the pandemic lockdown of 2020 that she sought out new ways to tell stories through the medium of paint. Since then she has continued to use painting to create narratives, drawing her inspiration from dreams, pop culture, the occult and nature.
