Graduate Residency

Madeleine Wood

Artist Statement

Whether I am using collage, paint or printed media, drawing is always the root of my work. I draw to make sense of my feelings, unpicking power tensions, pinpointing and playing with particular emotions – visualising them into graphic variations of animal-human hybrids and other anthropomorphic forms. Searching for the animals that lurk within us still.

This year has seen my practice grow bolder; approaching space as a theatre set for my inky characters, aiming to create immersive environments that encroach on the viewer while embracing the surrounding architecture - backgrounds for my figures’ interactions with each other and the audience.

Biography

I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2020. My work was featured in The Scotsman and The Times and shown at Unit 1 Gallery, London. I was then in a joint show at GENERATORprojects, Dundee and in September 2021 was awarded the year-long Graduate Residency at Leith School of Art. I was selected for RSA New Contemporaries 2020, showing at the Royal Scottish Academy in 2022, where I received the Arusha Gallery Award plus an upcoming solo show with them. I was commissioned to make murals for Edinburgh Central Library, and new work for Hidden Door Festival.
