Painting

Iain Black

Artist’s Statement

The sculptural quality of oil paint is fascinating for me, I love its texture, viscosity and feel. I am learning to develop my skill and practice by continually mixing and laying out colour, engaging in the material, finding line, tone and shape by pushing, pulling, adding, and removing it from the canvas in an never ending experiment.

I have been exploring what I call ‘generational colour’ via posed family photographs from the 1970’s, focussing on colour, light, and painterly expression to create the feeling of the time. By making the features anonymous I aim to enhance the audiences personal connection with their own past history through typical times and events.

Biography

Born and raised in Edinburgh, I have always been a ‘maker’, building and crafting in wood, metal, glass and leatherwork and deeply interested in movement of the human form via dance and circus skills. Retiring three years ago after 35 years in the corporate world I have been studying with the LSA, initially the figure course, various summer schools and this year the three day painting course which has been excellent development. Following a move to Aberfeldy I will be attending the Yellow House art school next year.
