Watercolour materials can be used in many flexible and experimental ways to create intriguing images.

Watercolour is often considered tricky and technique-led, but this need not be the case. This Summer School will help you to explore a variety of ways in which these materials can be used.

We will use watercolour, gouache, inks and related materials including Gum Arabic and resists, as well as unconventional painting tools, to create lively images which incorporate expressive mark-making and textural elements. After studio demonstrations and short practical exercises, we will gather research images in nearby locations to work with in the studio.

Engaging with the work of contemporary artists such as Ruth Asawa, David Hockney and Toba Khedoori, as well as geological and historical maps and diagrams, students will expand their awareness of how watercolour materials can be used to visually express a range of ideas.

This materials-based and ideas-led course will help you become familiar with a range of water-based materials, learning to deploy them to striking, and sometimes unexpected, effect.
