A week long, intensive portrait course allowing time for close observation of a model, considering composition and leading towards two refined oil paintings
Throughout the week, we will work with two models, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Monday and Tuesday will be spent focussing on observational drawing, then making acrylic paintings which will serve as a tonal base for oil paintings.
For the last three days of the course, we will paint in oils building up our portraits in layers and capturing a sense of likeness. Students will explore a colour palette, find areas of shadow and highlighted shapes, and learn how to use directional brushstrokes to describe the contours of the face. By the end of the week you will have created two finished oil paintings and a number of compositional and tonal studies.
