Cities are places of visual spectacle, but they are also full of sounds, smells, textures and events.
This three-day Summer School will introduce you to ways of making use of sensory, bodily and psychological responses to the city within your art practice. These responses are valuable prompts for artistic work and, increasingly, contemporary artists draw upon urban sensory material within their practices.
We will look at ways of attuning ourselves to the urban environment by exploring touch, smell, sight, sound, and the atmospheric impact that urban spaces and places may have on us. You will take part in group exercises and discuss your experience of these, sharing your insights with one another. You’ll use drawing, mark-making, simple sound recording on phones and 3D maquette-making to create individual practical responses including artist books, maps, scenographic models and a piece of work which results from a ‘micro-project’ of your own choice.
This course encourages close listening and observation, equipping you with a range of research strategies. Ideal for those with experience of making art, this course is also suitable for those without experience but who are interested in contemporary art practice and how we encounter cities.
