This Summer School will explore natural forms such as plants, seeds and ecosystems, using these as inspiration to develop a collection of artist books.
We will spend the first day in the Royal Botanical Garden, drawing and collecting ideas. While we are there, we will visit their inspiring library and herbarium to look at botanical samples and the beautiful books that depict them.
Back in the studio, students will learn different approaches to research with an emphasis on drawing. Throughout the week, we will work with various mixed media processes including printmaking and stitch. A variety of book structures will be introduced enabling students to find links between the structure and content of their books, inspired by artists such as Helen Douglas and Jane Hyslop. At the end of the week, students will consolidate their work into a finished series of book works.
