With an emphasis on mindfulness and process, this Summer School will employ a range of dry and wet media, including egg tempera, to explore a simplified, personal language of abstract mark-making.
We will begin with basic mindfulness and meditation techniques, specifically awareness of the rhythm of breathing. Through a series of drawing exercises, we will explore how this rhythm can be used as a basis for a process of repetitive, abstract mark-making. Multi-layered surfaces will be gradually built up with consideration of colour harmony and textural qualities.
The emphasis will be on enjoyment of the process rather than concern with the result, allowing students to fully explore the qualities of the materials they are using, such as chalk and oil pastels. We will also make egg tempera paint from scratch and learn how to apply it in layers.
Throughout the week, we will work on numerous studies on paper, in colour and black and white, and develop two or more paintings on panel.
