Observational drawing is a vital part of an Illustrator’s practice.
This Summer School will begin with observational drawing in a range of locations such as The Royal Botanic Gardens while taking inspiration from artists such as Edward Hopper, Van Gogh and illustrators like Pam Smy and Lucinda Rogers.
Using sketchbooks and drawing materials, we’ll focus on reportage illustration, capturing moving figures and creating a sense of place. We’ll be back in the studio for the end of the week, using our location drawings to inform working from imagination to create developmental sketches and a final outcome.
With a sketchbook filled with a variety of approaches to a range of locations, students will end the week with a developed illustrative response to drawing on location and an illustrated outcome inspired by this body of work.
