Discover the vibrant world of plants through their stories, science, history, and folklore.

This five-day summer school will guide you in foraging responsibly and extracting botanical colours. We will create unique artworks while exploring how plants connect us to the natural world and cultivate our sense of belonging.

Immersing ourselves in a guided walk along the Water of Leith, we will explore the names, histories, and hues of local plants. Back in the studio, we will learn to extract plant-based pigments, craft handmade inks, and dye textiles. Modifiers will be used experimentally to expand the plant colour spectrum and create hand-dyed, painted textiles.

Throughout the course, you will sketch and gather inspiration from plants as you refine your drawing skills with guidance on form and tone. By the end of the week, you’ll take home a botanical colour chart, original drawings and paintings, and a hand-dyed textile piece.

All core materials are provided.
