Working with a sketchbook is not the only way to gather artistic information about a space or place.
What does fieldwork mean as an artistic practice and why are artists increasingly using fieldwork to generate ideas for art?
You will be introduced to a range of simple strategies which can be used to explore everyday places, including:
• noticing skills
• ways of attuning to a space and place
• how to engage with an unfamiliar place as an artist
• how to record visual and non-visual information about a place beyond the sketchbook
• how to begin to generate artistic ideas from material gathered through fieldwork
This will result in a set of artistic fieldwork annotations, written notes and personal ideas for ways in which you might incorporate some of the strategies discussed and practised during the course into your own work. We will discuss and reflect on these short practical exercises in relation to contemporary artists and writers, including Ruth Ewan, Francis Alys, Kate Foster, Angelica Mesiti and Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing.
