Examine contemporary portraiture and the representation of the self through the lens of The Alter Ego.
The freedom gained through play, including fancy dress, can be used as a vehicle for self-expression, subverting traditional notions of portraiture.
After discussing references from fine art (Cindy Sherman, Leigh Bowery, Claude Cahoun and Grayson Perry), selfie culture, costuming and drag, we will move on to a drawing exercise based on the proportions of the head before ‘costuming up’ and preparing our individual self-portrait setups.
Students will create their alter egos by donning costumes, wigs, make-up and/or face paint. While some wigs and costumes will be provided, students are encouraged to consider who they would like to be and bring in any items they wish to dress up in, or props which will be incorporated into their setups.
Following a demonstration of mixed-media painting materials, you will have the remainder of the day for sustained, independent working on your self-portrait.
