‘All art is but dirtying the paper delicately.’ - John Ruskin
The day will begin with mark-making using graphite sticks, pencils and powder, hard rubbers, putty rubbers and rags. Working from life and with a keen focus on close observation, we will explore the push and pull of these materials, where a visual language becomes evident for each student.
Throughout the day, we will develop skills in expression, perception and intensity through a number of small studies, before moving on to produce one sustained piece. Students will be encouraged to objectively scrutinise the form of the figure alongside their subjective response to the life model.
Relevant artists include: Ginny Grayson, Giacometti, Roy Eastland, Delacroix, Bomberg, Jenny Saville, Anita Taylor, Ann Gale.
