Working in a purely abstract way can become a meditative experience in which the artist gives their full attention to the present moment.
We will begin with basic mindfulness and meditation techniques, specifically awareness of the rhythm of breathing. Through a series of drawing exercises, we will explore how this rhythm can be used as a basis for a process of repetitive, abstract mark-making. Multi-layered surfaces will be gradually built up with consideration of colour harmony and textural qualities.
The emphasis will be on enjoyment of the process rather than concern with the result, allowing students to fully explore the qualities of the materials they are using, including chalk and oil pastels.
