Combine and subtly manipulate materials to create abstract pieces and develop a deeper understanding of minimal line, form and colour.

Abstract art is often described by what it doesn’t instantly reveal – subject, narrative and emotional content for instance. We will learn to look at what is there, how to read the work and open up the potential of abstraction.

Beginning with a discussion of relevant artists such as Callum Innes, Juan Usle and Pat Steir, students will focus on a series of exercises considering the vital roles that material and support play in the construction of an abstract work. The tutor will demonstrate various techniques of addition and subtraction, and students will go on to experiment with these, exploring the process of invention and controlled chance.
