Maija Nygren is a Finnish knitwear-crochet-developer-educator based in Scotland, learned to crochet aged 5 with her grandmother and after a decade of working in theatrical costume making shoes, hats and wearable sculptures, Maija enrolled into Galashiels School of Textiles and graduated with a BA(Hons) Design for Textiles and an MA in Knitwear.
Maija’s creative practice is deeply rooted in material exploration and using traditional needlework techniques to create sculpted form. Maija runs her own creative practice as a crochet artist creating 3D shapes whenever possible using whatever materials she can get her hands on. Maija works as a knit technician at Glasgow School of Art and teaches all things creative at National Galleries Scotland, delivers virtual crochet classes for Google and engineers 3D knitwear for ultra conscious fashion brands.
