Ed Bruce works with sound, print and performance. He explores the break-down of oppositions and the new forms created in the process. Ed is interested in games, rituals, hobbies and pastimes that retain their relevance in a world of overlapping cultures. He is discovering the shared values of today’s world in the codes of behaviour we use to communicate and negotiate.
Born in Oxford, Ed studied Fine Art at Northumbria University, where he won the Alcan Sculpture Prize; and at the Glasgow School of Art. He worked in London where he exhibited with the Glue Factory group in disused buildings. While based in the North West of England he worked with Manchester University and Herbert Parkinson Ltd., a textile mill in Lancashire, in creating two 32-metre-long woven banners shown in Liverpool Cathedral for the 2008 European Capital of Culture. Ed’s solo exhibitions include his collaborative performance and sound work Allied and Amalgamated, performed in Glasgow in 2018. His sound art has been presented at a number of events including at Games for May run by Interview Room 11 in Edinburgh and at Tramway, Glasgow, and broadcast on Radiophrenia. He has exhibited in group exhibitions in Austria and worked at the Frans Masereel Centre in Belgium as a resident printmaker. He is a co-founder of Perform/Print, a project exploring the overlap between printmaking and performance.
