Cat Tams is an artist, geographer and teacher based in Glasgow. She studied drawing and painting at Leith School of Art, and subsequently graduated with a BA (Hons) in Painting and Printmaking from Glasgow School of Art. Cat builds paintings that are centred around observational drawing - the vibrating qualities of the visible world inspires a heightened and vibrant response to colour, light, form and visual connections. Her subject varies from still life objects, to landscapes and the human form, and her work is informed by an interest in memory, time and place, and our relationship with objects.
Cat teaches online and in-person drawing and painting workshops alongside a studio practice, teaching weekly life-drawing and portrait classes with London Drawing, and still-life workshops. Cat is project developer and coordinator for The Never Ending Glen artist residency and curator of their annual exhibition, facilitating a programme of workshops and mentoring for selected artists. She worked as a members assistant at Edinburgh Printmakers, assisting and leading printmaking workshops, and as a studio assistant at Leith School of Art. Her background in geography and teaching informs her material process, with a particular interest in the practice of teaching and learning through experiential, visual and material exploration. She holds a BA (Hons) in Geography from the University of Edinburgh, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education, and her work teaching in secondary schools, as a sports and Duke of Edinburgh coach, and as an English Language teacher, has enabled her to develop an inclusive and creative approach to teaching in a wide variety of settings and groups.
